Measurements for preemies cap:
Stop increasing when diameter is between 3" and 3.5"
Length of cap from top of the head to brim - 3.5".
3ply normal thin yarn - 3.5 size hook

This is with hdc (half double crochet) but could be made with sc too in which case a few more rows of the circle could be needed.
Always start with 2ch at the start of every row for height of hdc.

R1 - 6 ch. join to first ch with slip stitch to form a circle
R2 - 12 hdc into the circle
R3 - * 1hdc inc, 1hdc* 6 times - to make 18 stitches
R4 -* 1hdc inc, 2 hdc* 6 times for 24 st
R5 -* 1hdc inc, 3 hdc* 6 times for 30 st
R6 -* 1hdc inc, 4 hdc* 6 times for 36 st
R7 -* 1hdc inc, 5 hdc* 6 times for 42 st
R8 -* 1hdc inc, 6 hdc* 6 times for 48 st
R9 -* 1hdc inc, 7 hdc* 6 times for 54 st
(May be less rows for thicker yarn)

Continue in straight stitch for these 54 stitches (without any increase )till work measures approx 4" from the top to the brim, and the cap fits your your fist snugly.

After required length has been reached, draw yarn through last chain and cut off yarn
